The HTC Hero is one of our newest handsets and I absolutely love it!  I’m one of the Product Managers at 3 and I’ve been responsible for the launch of this phone on our network.  Take a look at my video tour of the phone below, and the feature that makes the 3 version unique – Spotify.

    Hello,
Please could you let me know what settings I need to be able to send MMS messages. I’ve not been able to send any and to be honest I’ve never checked my bill to see if I have been charged for the attempts. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

@Heros Hero – The Three Skype app is free to use but as you say doesn’t work with WiFi and is not being updated to do so. The official android app will be chargeable but if you’re on the One Plan you will be able to take advantage of all-you-can-eat data.

Q for the Mod. I have a HTC hero, Now there are two version of skype with i can install one officallly from the android market and one from the three website? This has lead me to wonder if i install the offical newer version from the android market will this work like the three one in that it will be three to make calls? I prefer this version as it works on wifi as well as 3g? If this is not the case will the three version be updated to work with wifi?

@Damien – Hmmm we should be able to sort this for you, although it was a little while ago now. I’ll drop you an email :-)

  5. Damien on November 12, 2010

    Hi,
Just wondering if you could inform me of where i can get the offical 2.1 update. Like many others i didn’t accept the first request and now can’t find the files anywere on the web, including HTC’s own support page.

    Regards,
    Damien

@Andre C – We haven’t seen this on other Hero’s on our network and the ROM you’re talking about is not an official rom from HTC.We have used the same SW as other networks. I’m going to refer this to our Skype manager…

  7. Andre C on October 24, 2010

    Hi There.
I have 2 HTC hero. One with 3 on 2.1 and the other one ex Orange Rooted on Villainrom 2.1

I can’t stand using the HERO on 3UK. They both have 3UK simcards inside but the 3UK branded handset is SLOW, FREEZES, SKYPE is a JOKE and runs 1/4 of the APPS I have on the other phone.

I cannot believe that after all this waiting for the official update you couldn’t get us a proper working software.
The things that upset me the most is that 3UK SKYPE version runs better on the non official ROM then the 3UK one! How is that possible??? I don’t even call you anymore because just talking with someone in India that start telling me how to ‘switch on and off the phone’ resolves most of the problem drives me nuts.
And I’ve even paid 75pounds to upgrade to hero…

@Bill – It would be useful if you can drop me a note and let me know which store it was please?

  9. Moderator on October 11, 2010

@jgmitchl – Our CTO team are looking into this issue but I don’t have a fix yet. I can arrange a call with customer services if you want me to, like I’ve done for Ben?

  10. Bill on October 9, 2010

    Many thanks for your reply.
Just wondering why sales people in the Three shop said Hero WAS getting 2.2??? In fact he said all android phones!!

I will follow up with them.

    Many thanks.

    Bill

  11. John on October 9, 2010

Well I have to say i’m also EXTREEMLEY upset with the Hero update. I wonder what this long testing 3 did actually was? Perhaps in the future you should allow US to be beta testers – you would get far better test results by doing that than doing it yourselves.

My hero now often freezes, sometimes the touchscreen won’t work, typing is slower than it used to be, sometimes grinding to a halt, battery liufe is poor, alarm won’t switch off – keeps snoozing.

This is really poor – you’ve upset many of your customers. I also don’t understand why we will not get 2.2. My handset was only about 7 months old (I got it as soon as it came out in the UK) when we learned that we would not get the 2.2 update on our NEW handsets.

I will probably end up rooting the phone as I suspect 3 will do nothing to rectify this situation. As far nas i’m concerned, my poine is broken and you should replace it – with one that works! – why should i have to root it or downgrade it? My Hero WAS a great phone :o (

  12. jgmitchl on October 8, 2010

@mod I hope you are going to help everyone else that has posted on here with the same problems as Ben

  13. Moderator on October 8, 2010

@NickG – No the Skype available on Android is not free to use, it will use your data allowance. Only Skype on My3 is free.

  14. Moderator on October 8, 2010

@Ben – I’m going to drop you an email and see how we can get your phone issues fixed.

  15. Moderator on October 8, 2010

@Bill – We’ve taken a look and it appears Tom Tom does not support Androids, see here. The later Android OS 2.2 delivers improved Bluetooth support but I’m afraid this won’t be available to HTC Hero :-(

  16. Moderator on October 7, 2010

@heros hero – I’m afraid we don’t give the option to force 2G, sorry! :-(

  17. NickG on October 7, 2010

    @mod

just added the new skype from android market, version 16777754, can you confirm that it will still be free to use as it works great on my phone, even though it’s not 3 skype?

  18. NickG on October 7, 2010

    @ mod

    I’m using Skype on 3 version 32

  19. Moderator on October 7, 2010

  20. Ben on October 6, 2010

I phoned up the customer help line in India and there was a very disappointing language barrier he couldn’t understand me and I couldn’t understand him when I finally explained it he told me he would make some enquiries and phone me back after 2 hours I sadly realised he just wanted rid of me. I am so so disappointed in 3 and there lack of help so now I have only 2 options root my phone or keep my buggy phone, and if I decide to root my phone and I brick it I lose my mobile phone…..

  21. Moderator on October 6, 2010

@NickG – Thanks for the info, can you also let me know what version of Skype you’re using?

  22. Ben on October 6, 2010

Hi just after a bit of advice really I’m thinking of rooting my phone tomorrow I don’t want to but can’t see no other way.
I am having all the problems stated in other posts, poor connection, messages not getting sent, internet cutting off randomly and really poor battery life. non of these are major problems but due to me having another year left on my contract I know its going to stress me out.
I know the Hero isn’t getting Android 2.2 but I just wondered if 3 had any updates coming out to resolve these problems ? I don’t want to root my phone but at the moment the phone is really playing up.
Any advice or comments would be great.

  23. heros hero on October 4, 2010

Why have three blocked the option to set to 2g mode this is most annoying because i have very marginal 3g in my flat however not enouth to make calls i can manually change it to the 2g (orange) network however it does not stay on this long enouth to make a call i unstand that three block using 2g only mode to save them having to pay out to orange however this is a majoy anounce as now i cannot use my phone in my flat! Is there anyway of forcing 2g or not?

  24. Moderator on October 1, 2010

@NickG – We’ll have an update for you on this next week…

  25. NickG on September 30, 2010

Has there been any update on skype?, whenever I go onto My Three it still says my hero 2.1 is not a compatible handset and would I like to upgrade? The current skype app I have just force closes after log in

    I’m using software number 3.35.771.1

  26. Bill on September 30, 2010

    Bluetooth DUN

I have tried the App Pdanet, and gets to 60% on my Tom Tom (510) and will go no further. It may be that I need to set up connection string manually. If you can supply this it may help.
I visited the 3 shop this week and had a word with them about this problem, and said that all should be resolved when Android 2.2 is released in October, as it will support all profiles, and if I still have problems after that to have a word with the manager. But as I have had the hero since February, exchange etc is unlikely.

    Firmware 2.1-update1 Software number 3.35.771.1
Trying to download skype via a link sent from your website

  28. Moderator on September 29, 2010

@Ian99 – Our team have tried to reproduce the issue you’re having installing Skype on your phone but are struggling to. It would be really useful if you can let me know what version of software you’re using. You can find this out by going through the following menus: Menu > settings > About phone > Software information. If you can let us know the number that appears on the screen, the team may be able to reproduce the issue and eventually fix it :-) If you can confirm the exact error message you’re getting that would be really useful too? Thanks!

  29. ZerotoHero on September 27, 2010

    @UnhappyHero

It depends on what you have turned on as to why your battery is draining so quickly.

I still get up to 4 days out of my Hero depending on usage after owning it for 10 months.

There are a few things I can recommend:
Download Advanced Task Killer or similar app from the Marketplace. This will allow you to stop any apps that may still be running in the background sucking the life out of the battery.

Try turning off your wifi and mobile internet at night or during the day when you are busy sleeping or working and don’t need constant updates from emails, twitter or facebook if you use them.

There are some widgets that you can put on one of your home screens. On any screen where you have room for some apps or widgets click on the plus (+) in the bottom right of the screen. Then click on Widget then click on Settings. I have added the Bluetooth, GPS, Mobile Network and Wi-Fi widgets on my main home screen. This means I can turn them all off with a single tap and turn them on with a single tap. (It also allows you to see what is turned on as well.)

Press the menu button and click on Settings in the bottom right of the screen. Click on accounts & sync. Take the tick off the background data. (You will need to turn this on when you go to the Marketplace. If it is turned off it will take you straight to this setting when you try to access the Marketplace to turn it on again.)
It is also worth checking your Location setting while you are in Settings and turn of the Use GPS satelites if it is turned on.

So in summary I have Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Mobile Network and GPS turned off most of the time and I always kill all apps except the ones I want to keep on (like clock for alarms) before turning the screen off.

I hope you can use some of this and get some more life out the battery.

@Ian99 – Skype should be compatible with your 2.1 Hero and your partner’s Wildfire… Can you give me some detail on the issue you’re having?

  31. Ian99 on September 25, 2010

    @Mod bump
Update please on why Skype is not compatible with Android 2.1 on Hero or my partner’s Wildfire

  32. jgmitchl on September 24, 2010

I would note that I am suffering the same text issue. It seems to correspond to the drop in network connection that has disturbed my internet usage, calls and Google maps usage. Please fix these issues, the delay in getting the update out was justified by a protracted test period yet we are still all suffering here!

  33. UnhappyHero on September 23, 2010

Just one more thing…I forgot to mention texting. I am getting the same problem as Simon in that since the update there has been a huge increase in the amount of times that messages fail to send, and people telling me that they receive the message more than once….

  34. Moderator on September 23, 2010

    @CrispyBacon – Thanks for the feedback :-)

  35. UnhappyHero on September 22, 2010

I’m getting really fed up with all the problems with my HTC Hero since the 2.1 update. Prior to the update I could put up with the annoying niggles (main one being the handset switching itself off at random for no reason – my other half got the same phone at the same time and his did the same). Since the update, where do I start?! The handset continues to randomly switch itself off. The battery life has become ridiculous, from charging every few days (depending on use) I now have to carry the charger with me all the time – low/no use I have to charge it once a day, but if I actually use the phone I have to charge it more! For example, I charged the phone just before I went to bed last night, didn’t use it once it was fully charged, 7 hours later when I got up it was already down to half charge and all it had done was ring the alarm! This leads me nicely to the alarm clock function which now refuses to switch off. Even though I am swiping the screen to turn it off, it repeats at 10 minute intervals 2 or 3 times before finally stopping. It’s like it’s been put on snooze rather than being turned off. I’m also having difficulties with some of the numbers in my contact list, such as my other half’s. The phone has added 44 to the start of the number so that when I dial it, the number isn’t recognised. When I go to edit the contact details to remove the 44, it’s not actually there! But when I save it it comes back and displays with the 44. This means I have to manually type the number in to call it, rather than using the speed dial or contact list. This is madness!! There are other things that aren’t springing to mind at the moment but I think that will do for now. I’ve gone from loving this phone to hating it since the update and I’ve still got a year and half left on the contract.

@David – I’ve run your queries past the devices team and have a bit of feedback for you. I’m afraid in response to your first question re tethering on the Hero, it’s not supported in the software. The second issue you raise was never discovered in testing, can you register a fault with 333 please and we’ll look into it? We’ve also never come across your third issue but we’re raising it as an issue now… Sorry that wasn’t more helpful but many thanks for flagging and you’ve got the ball rolling on a couple of things.

  37. Moderator on September 21, 2010

@Paul Moran – No probs Paul, I’ll drop you an email :-)

  38. Simon on September 21, 2010

Hi all, since the update im having problems with texting! 7 times out of 10 it says unable to send so i do a resend and it normally goes, however people are saying they are reciving the text more than once!

This is a real headach as sometimes i dont even notice it hasnt gone and check the phone sometime later to see it hasnt gone.

  39. CrispyBacon on September 21, 2010

For what it is worth. I upgraded to 2.1 without a hitch. All data was grabbed back from google and apps were either there or available to install.. Only thing that didn’t work was tethering. Only solution I could find on web was a hard reset which fixed that and too about an hour to get back to normal. My observation is that you really need to run “Advanced Task Manager” or taskiller to close all the unnecessary apps running in memory. Leave all system apps alone like clock etc. My most useful apps are Skype, Truphone, Fring, Opera, Maps, Navigation, and MapDroyd. Since 2.1 came out I have had 1 white screen and 1 crash. Otherwise am really pleased. Just keep background apps to a minimum and you wont see any problems with speed. Hero is cool….Still carry my old 1st gen Iphone around but for how long. Company HTC Toch Pro for work is good 2 dare I say it with WM6.1. They all have their plus points so I end up carrying 3 phones still…

  40. Ian99 on September 20, 2010

Had to do a master reset on the phone after the 2.1 update due to a hardware issue. Tried to re-install SKYPE but it says SKYPE is not compatible with my phone. What is going on?
