BlackBerry Torch 9800 on Three.

It’s a BlackBerry®, but not as we know it. Yes, the BlackBerry Torch 9800 is now available on Three!

What makes this phone really exciting is that it’s the first to feature the BlackBerry 6 OS – Blackberry’s latest version of their own operating system. There’s a lot of buzz about operating systems in the mobile phone world right now, and OS 6 is a really exciting development. The new OS basically means that the whole phone is a lot faster. The internet is really easy to navigate because OS 6 gives the Torch a brand new browser which allows you to have multiple web pages open at once. And amongst other things, OS 6 has given the Torch a really easy-to-use music and video player.

The Torch 9800 is the first BlackBerry in the UK with a QWERTY-slider design. Sounds complicated(!), but that basically means that you can decide whether to use the phone’s huge touch screen, or flip it open to reveal the famous full-size BlackBerry keypad. Switching between the two while you’re on the move can make life a whole lot easier.

Of course, it’s got the obligatory smartphone camera – 5 megapixels in this case – and you can pull all of your social networks into one neat and tidy feed on your homescreen.

I’ve made a little video to show off what I think are the best bits of the BlackBerry Torch 9800 – let us know what you think…

@Sedge ” What you need to do is text START to 38001 and this will take £5 from your account and give you access to BB Services for 30 days. It’s an automatic renewal, but you can manage your subscription by clicking on the My BB Services icon in the main menu.” Great now i know how it works on PAYG.

However my orgional question was can i add this on to my £25 one plan sim only deal the anser i got was yes click on provided hyperlink. I did it states

You can buy an Add-on from My3 on your computer or on your Three phone:

I have highlighted the fact that you cant add blackberry add on vis my three or via my hand set. which makes a the information provide useless in respect of contract phone

It explains it all here too :-)

  5. hip59

@ SedgeMy three is somewhat outdated ad when I log on and pick my mobile as a blackberry I cant see BB add on listed, I also loged on with my three PAYG number is the same. Looks like a call to the useless staff in india if i need this added on.

  6. Moderator: Sedge

@ hip59 – You can get the add ons on sim only deals :-) You can find out about getting the add ons here.

  7. hip59

Can one get the blackberry add on to the one plan sim only deal? I currently have a Blackberry on O2 plus a contract with three that Im underusing and would relly like to be able to get this add on>

Can it be done or will I end up going to Three PAYG with the BB add on?

  8. Rose

@ James @ Mods: Thanks I have BB Services now! It works with non 3 handsets too! They could have just told us! :) Anyway Thank you very much!

  9. James

@ Rose – I was pay monthly and did it about 6 months ago. As Three offer PAYG Blackberries I assume there must be a similar bolt on where you pay £xx per month out of your credit for the service or something. I cant see the age of the SIM affecting it as its just the services provisioned for the phone. If its a bolt on and it doesnt work I’m sure they will let you remove it.

  10. Rose

@ James: Thanks for your msg. I called 333 and they said they cant guarantee me that it will work. When did you buy the SIM and when did you replace your HTC. Sorry to bother you but I am just trying to figure out whether it might work for me too! So your on PAYG too?

  11. James

@Rose – I would expect to, I had the Blackberry add on added when I bought an unlocked Curge 3G to replace my aging HTC Hero – you just need to be asked to be passed to the Blackberry team when you call up 3 CS but I’m sure a Mod will confirm that.

  12. Rose

@James: Hello James. Many thanks for your post. I have a BB 9300 (3G) handset. Would BB services still be available with an older 3 SIM?

  13. Moderator: Kaz

@nino – the best thing to do is call customer services and get an add on for your BB

  14. James

@ Rose, I’ve certainly used a non-Three BB before with my 3 SIM – the only caveat I had was that the handset was 3G capable. Not all Blackberrys are 3G enabled – which handset do you have?

  15. Rose

@ Johanna. This is regarding my previous posts. I have called 333 they currently offer BB services only to 3 BB handsets. I hope this is going to change soon :(

  16. nino

hi, i recently bought BB 9780, sim free. and i am on contract on three and i wish to use the BB services on the phone. how can i get a BB plan? or can i get an add on for BIS?

  17. Moderator: Sedge

@ Lukers – We currently don’t have any plans to range the BlackBerry 9670 however we will be ranging the 9780 if that is of any interest to you.

  18. lukers

@Moderator: Johanna – Are you expecting this smartphone on Three? (Blackberry style 9670)

  19. Moderator: Johanna

@hip59 & @Rose – I’m sorry I thought the Blackberry add-on would appear in My3 like the other add-ons but I’ve just discovered that you will need to call 333. Let us know how you get on.

  20. hip59

    Mod

Thanks for this. However Ive loged onto my three even when Ive listed my mobile as a Blackberry I cant see the optiopn for me to add the BB add on in fact I cant even see the BB add on on your add ons, so were is it or do I need to phone Cs to brequest this?

  21. Moderator: Johanna

@Rose – Right… Yes you can! So long as the phone is unlocked (if it isn’t this costs £15 & can be done quickly, by calling customer services). You’ll just need to get the Blackberry add-on from My3.

  22. Rose

@ hip59: Thanks I think it was just me who didnt understood it.

Thanks to the moderators for replying tho. I am waiting for your reply. I have a SIM from 3 UK which I bought directly from your shop. I was using this SIM in an other handset, until I bought the BB (sim lock free, but not frm three). I hope I can use BB services with 3 otherwise I would need to look for other options.

    Thanks in advance.

  23. Moderator: Johanna

@hip59 – Thanks for your post. I’m trying to get some more info for you but the person I need to speak to in our devices team isn’t available at the mo. I’ll reply as soon as I get some more info. Re BB PAYG we offer the Curve and the Pearl – see here.

  24. hip59

    Blackberry on PAYG:

Mod I note your confusing reply as follows:

Rose- Only a specific BB PrePay SIM from Three would grant access to BB services. You’d have to go through the activation process (SMS to shortcode) included in the SIM pack. SIM cards obtained in our stores could provide that, but if yours was obtained in some other shops, like retailers, third parties etc, they wouldn’t work. Hope this helps.

Sim cards from three stores COULD provide that could or will and I understond BB on Three PAYG was not up and running can you confirm as you reply is tottally misleading.

Hey This is prob totally unrelated by didnt kno where else to poste. I was wondering whether you know when the Blackberry Services are available for Blackberrys which are not bought from 3. I am currently on the Pay as you go plan with three, but can use these services yet. Thanks!

  27. Moderator: Johanna

@lukers – What kind of info are you after?

  28. lukers

hello Moderator, do you know something about blackberry style 9670??????

  29. gary

Hi…I have a HTC desire on contract with three (the one plan), I am interested in purchasing a blackberry torch and will obviously need to add the blackberry add on…I called 333 and the guy said I could add it but he sounded a bit confused and wasn’t very convincing! I’m just worried about going and spending £400+ on a phone I won’t be able to use! Any help would be appreciated!

  30. Moderator

@ James – yes, they can change their Dongle plan for an iPad plan but, we don’t offer iPads so it would simply be a SIM swap. You just need to contact customer services on 333. All it means is that we’ll cancel the current SIM that they have and send them a new 3G MicroSIM that they can then put in their iPad :-)

  31. James

@Mod, just a random wondering – I have both the Torch and a 3G dongle with yourselves. As I have 3GB of data with my Torch plan would it be possible to swap my 3G dongle plan for an iPad plan? I signed up for the 18 month dongle plan before I upgraded when I only had 1GB of data to use on my phone.

  32. Moderator

@ Hip59- Sorry for the delay. Currently the BlackBerry add on is not compatible with our SIM only plans . However we’ve launched some new plans last week which are compatible :-)

  33. hip59

    @MOD

Can this be done on PAYG to or only contract?

  34. Moderator

@ James- Thanks for this. You beat me to it :-)

  35. James

@hip59 – you should be able to, I was able to swap my normal internet bolt on (£5 a month with my HTC Hero) to a £5 blackberry bolt on when I bought an unlocked Curve 3G. It did take a few times to reassure the helpline my handset was a 3G handset as Three are a 3G only network.

  36. hip59

I currently have a blackberry bold 9700. Can someone in three explain why I can not buy a blackberry add on at £5 a month for this rather than having to but a new device. T-Mobiil will seell me 6 months BB access as a blot on for £20 . Come on three explain

  37. Moderator

@James – We have no plans to launch BES at the mo, but yes we’d probably blog about it so it’s worth keeping a check here and if you’re on twitter it’s worth following @ThreeUKLatest :-)

  38. James

If you do start offering BES access will there be some kind of announcement as I would be keen to sign up for it

  39. Moderator

@Phil Graham – We agree with you and have lowered the handset prices :-)

  40. Moderator

@ray – We’re pleased you think the One Plan is the best on the market and we’ve heard yours and others feedback, listened to it, and amended our prices for the Torch.

    New prices here:

Internet Texter 100 – £30 per month and £149 upfront charge
Internet Texter 500 – £35 per month and £49 upfront charge
One Plan – £40 per month and £49 upfront

No news on the white iPhone yet I’m afraid…

  41. cyps

    @ mod
Thanks for the email. I replied in kind, looking forward to your response.

  42. Simon

Hey. Loving the look of this.

Can you tell me though, using 3 UK can I use my company’s Blackberry Enterprise Server? I know 3 don’t offer BES, which is fine, but I’m told that as my company is supplying the BES that all 3 has to do is enable its use on the handset.

Just want to be sure before upgrading to this phone, as I think it’s really important to be able to use the BES features, even if 3 don’t actually offer this themselves – looks very very smart phone!

  43. Gary Moncrieff

@Shane I have seen it cheaper than that sim free aswell, think it was around £460 from superetrader

  44. ray

WELL ? I had to write in about the farce regarding the Blackberry 9800 up front charge of £ 249. for £30 pcm. As Phil Graham stated the the 2yr, contracts should alleviate this practice? So the day after release I called CS to voice my concern. Now a week later it has changed but not quite, as the 2yr, contract cost for ONE plan £969 , is now a new cost of £ 1009 ( £40 pcm plus £49 up front ) whoops an extra £40. Hope I have the figures correct? Anyway it is a great phone, one I have waited for at least four months to add to my two young teenagers accounts but this crazy policy has allowed your competitors to get in first with FREE phones again.Whilst the ONE plan is probably the best on the market, customers are still going to Orange/Vodafone and O2 etc,.As a multiple account customer over the seven years, you have improved but you do try our patience to the limit, just like shooting yourself in the foot? Please,Please get a grip. ( PS when is my White Iphone coming ) ?

  45. Moderator

@James – We don’t have any plans to offer BES at the mo, but we are reviewing it :-)

  46. cyps

@ mod, I find this very odd to say the least, I purchased this Blackberry with Three on my previous contract and thought logic would dictate the pay as u go bberry service would be available for it? I even received a message frown blackberry services that the handset had been registered with the network?! I’m a Three contract holder who wants to use a previous handset on pay as u go and have to buy a brand new blackberry for the privilege?
I very much doubt u would, a shame really, now I have to pay 15 quid for an unlock code!?! LOL

  47. Phil Graham

Why would you pay £249 upfront for the handset and £30pm on a 2 year contract?

I thought the idea of a 2 year contract was to pay a low line rental and not have to pay upfront for a handset.

Does this not defeat the object?

  48. James

I don’t suppose three will be offering BES support any time in the near future?

  49. Moderator

@Cyps – Sorry you’re disappointed but at this stage the only Blackberry handset we have on PAYG is the Blackberry Curve. We’re looking at a solution to be able to support other Blackberry devices (Three and non Three) though…

  50. jerry123

The price…woah. I ended up getting my contract from carphone in the end. I thought with the iphone offer being so competitive, so would this!! I really wanted it on 3 because my other half is also with 3 so i thought I would settle with the 9700 and even that price is a joke. So ended up payin more a month and not paying an absurd upfront price…ive got 14 money bak gaurentee, so thats 13 days now for you guys to PLEASEEE reduce your price or lose out on my custom (an prob my mrs aswell when she upgrades)

  51. James

@Cyps, as long as the handset is 3G capable than it should work on the Three network I would have thought? I bought a sim free 9300 and easily changed my internet bolt on for the blackberry one when I confirmed it was 3G capable.

  52. Shane Dean

Can be bought SIM free from expansys for £499…kinda puts your upfront price into perspective doesn’t it…BIG rethink needed 3. BIG rethink….

  53. Cyps

Well that was a waste of time, just been informed you cannot get a blackberry services top up for old blackberry phones. You can only get it for new blackberry handsets?! Even when said blackberry is a Three branded handset?!

Where does it state that on the website?!

Can someone give me a rational explanation of this nonsense?

  54. Cyps

I waited for this handset for a loong time, being an avid blackberry user and quite frankly feel let down. After getting an opportunity to test the phone before release and then seeing the price point I switched to a HTC Desire. RIM cant be beaten for the effeciency and integration of their back end support (BIS, BBM etc) but the handset at that price being their flagship I’m sorry they need to do better.

Now to top up my old battered Bold 9000 lol.

  55. Gary

Mines arrived today! :D So far so good. Really impressed with the deal Three gave me as an existing customer.

  56. Gary Moncrieff

I kinda agree with Martin, sim free price isnt much more than the HTC Desire when it first launched.

  57. Moderator

    @Mike E71 – Yes it is :-)

  58. Mike E71

Is it possible to use the free (Three) Skype app?

  59. martin.cat

Ouch !!! Big up front payment even on dearer one plan
Good to see phone released on three early but don’t think you will get many takers when other networks have it for a lot less
