Guest review: Samsung Omnia 7.

We’ve been looking at ways to bring our phones to life and help you decide which phone is the one for you. The unboxing videos are there to give you a bit of a flavour of what the phones have to offer, and we’re asking a number of our lovely blogger friends to review our hero handsets too.
We were delighted when Abul Hussain, from adonismobile, agreed to be out latest guest blogger. Here he is with a Samsung Omnia 7 review.

At first glance the Samsung Omnia 7 is very plain and simple looking. But once turned on, it reveals one of the brightest, sharpest screens found on any mobile phone to date. This amazing screen works really well with the tiles found on this Windows Phone 7 mobile and the colours, saturation and contrast are all really distinctive. It’s a pleasure to both use and look at from the off.

As this is one of the first mobiles to run on the new Windows Phone 7 platform, I was very eager to get underway. It took me around 20 minutes to get everything setup; e-mail, twitter and music. By far the most impressive feature (apart from the gorgeous screen) has to be the Xbox Live and Zune integration. Not only are they easy to navigate through, but they look amazing. In fact, everything about this phone looks amazing.

I set about using the Omnia 7 as my main handset. It’s quite clear this is a cloud orientated phone, which means resources, software and information are all accessed over the internet. Therefore, it’s vital that you have access to consistently good coverage. Almost everything requires a connection to refresh and get the latest, this is especially essential if like me you’re ever reliant on e-mails and Twitter. Thanks to the fact Three has great coverage near me and in most places around the UK, it wasn’t an issue. Having my e-mails with me, access to Twitter and the Zune Marketplace was great for keeping me in contact but also entertained on the train journeys with the choice of games and music on offer.

The Omnia 7 comes with a 5 Megapixel camera, which is pretty much standard these days and is up to par with others, it also has an LED flash, which if I’m honest is a little overpowering. The Camera on the whole is very good as is the integration of Microsoft’s SkyDrive. Anyone with a Hotmail or Windows Live ID will have a SkyDrive, this is essential for quickly and simply uploading you’re pictures for backup. There is a very generous 25GB of space provided by Microsoft. As the phone itself comes with 8GB only, it will come in handy. I wasn’t impressed it didn’t have a MicroSD slot, as I have many spare cards to expand the memory if needed, not that I did in the 2 weeks I’ve had the phone.

Long term SkyDrive will become more of a solution as when downloading apps is not only easy to do using the Marketplace, but they are pretty big in size. In the first few days I had already downloaded quite a few; Seesmic, Twitter, Flickr Manager, IMDB, Foursquare, Flowers (Xbox Live game), IcanHasCheezburger, Last.fm, Youtube and Red Bull TV. Most of these are essential to me, but some I just tried out mainly because it’s so simple to download and try them out.

Overall I have to admit, I was really really impressed with the Samsung Omnia 7 and Windows Phone 7. I found it easy to use, impressed with how it looked and with Three, always connected which is essential.

    @Matty – Three customers started to receive prompts to update their Windows Phone 7 phones as of end of last week. To make sure everyone is able to download their update, it’s being offered to groups one step at a time. As soon as it’s available, customers’ phones will prompt them to update.

    @Three Thanks for sending us an Omnia 7 to review over at: http://www.latestgadgets.co.uk/mobiles-pdas/2865-samsung-omnia-7-review – it’s certainly got a beautiful screen!

    @Andrew Although I hate to sound like a cunning marketing piece, the Omnia on Three gave me much better coverage than my Orange iPhone 4.

    @Andrew

    I’m a Three customer and will praise them, mainly because they are fast and reliable where I live. More than anything, I get most for my money with Three.

    @Mod – http://blog.nethosted.co.uk/ – we’d review the phone from a business users point of view as well as a consumers. From what I read WP7 has very much been designed with business users in mind too. We appreciate you’re trying to sell these things so we will keep things positive but also balanced and fair.

    @ Andrew- Yep we gave Abul the phone on the Three network and he wrote the review.

    Are you sure this is a review of the phone? It seems to me more like a sly piece of marketing for your network:

    “It’s quite clear this is a cloud orientated phone, which means resources, software and information are all accessed over the internet. Therefore, it’s vital that you have access to consistently good coverage”

    “Thanks to the fact Three has great coverage near me and in most places around the UK, it wasn’t an issue.”

    “…and with Three, always connected which is essential.”
